Solar Window Screens on Your House?

Solar screens seem so beneficial in our hot Austin, Texas summers to keep some of the extreme heat out and the cool air in.  But, the decision of whether or not to put them on your house has several pro’s and con’s.  Some homeowners won’t put them on because the dark grey screens seem to change the street appeal of the house entirely.  They can make the house look dark, eerie and unwelcoming.  They cover the entire window, rather than just the lower half.  And, they will substantially darken an entire room by diffusing the sun light.  So, it may make the inside of the house seem unwelcoming also.  On the plus side, they claim to keep the house 10 to 15 degrees cooler and block the sun’s heat and glare.  The cost to have a company make the screens and put…

City of Pflugerville giving Free Trees

The City of Pflugerville’s council recently approved a new free tree program.  It is a 13 year long effort to improve the city’s beauty.  The city’s forestry department plans to offer 800 free trees the first year to Pflugerville residents with yards large enough to support them.  Notices will begin appearing on resident’s doors.  The first targeted neighborhoods will include Mountain Creek and Bohls Place.


Williamson County Park update

The Southwest Regional Park in Williamson County is on county road 175 just north of Chandler Road (1431).  It has been open for a few years and has added new features from time to time.  By the summer of 2010 Williamson County will add a $1.7 million water play area complete with restrooms, a large sheltered picnic area and additional parking.  Sounds like fun!!

Leander TX | New Leander Company to Employ about 4000 People by 2016

Austin-based Valence Technology, Inc. recently purchased about 131 acres of land in Leander just north of Old 2243 west of 183.  The 1.9 million sq.ft. manufacturing facility should be completed in 2012 and should employ about 4000 people by 2016.  Valance makes energy storing products (aka batteries) for many products, such as the Segway, E-Z Go golf carts, double decker buses, and the Brammo EV bike.  The average pay and benefit package for employees of Valance is $45,000 - $50,000 a year.  It should be a big boost to Leander’s economy.


Leander Texas | Leander to get new skate park

Leander’s city council recently approved the construction of a new skate park.  It will be located in the Benbrook Ranch neighborhood which is north of 2243 just off Bagdad Road.  It will be located on Halsey Drive.  Once the contract is awarded construction should be completed in 120 days.


FREE Home Engery Impovement from Austin Energy!

Austin Energy currently provides free home energy improvements to make homes more energy efficient by protecting from the elements of wind, rain, sunlight, and hot and cold weather.  According to Austin Energy: “Weatherization measures include in part: sealing air leaks, installing insulation, replacing, repairing or retrofitting outdated air and cooling equipment, water heaters, and refrigerators and installing energy efficient doors and windows.”

Eligible homeowners must meet federal income requirements. Currently, there are about 100,000 eligible Austin Energy customers. The house must not be valued at more than $150,000.
