Georgetown TX History
Georgetown has a wealth of history. Early on, the Tonkawa people, as well as many other native Americans, made what would be known as Georgetown home as they traveled across the plains searching buffalo, and unknowingly beginning to weave the rich historical fabric of this well-loved city. Battles between Comanches and European settlers continued into the 1860s. The community was named after George Washington Babcock, a benefactor who offered up his own land on which to build the new town. The sweet water, plentiful timber and fertile land of Georgetown attracted early Americans as well as new immigrants from Sweden. Cotton was a major crop, and cattle were ranched in large numbers as well, creating a stable economy for the area. The 1921 flood combined with the Great Depression put a damper on Georgetown's agrarian lifestyle, but residents and the economy bounced back. Today, the city enjoys accolades such as that of Fortune Small Business Magazine, which ranked it number two on its list of 100 Best Places to Live & Launch a Business in America.
